How To Ask For What You Want
As female professionals, we face more obstacles in our career paths than our male counterparts. While society has conditioned women to believe they are subordinate to our male colleagues, this is simply not the case. While we wait for societal norms to catch up, it is our job, as female professionals, to ask and strive for, what we want. Always keep in mind that no one cares about your career and advancement more than you! So how do we do this?
Do Your Research!
First, you must do your research and make sure you are fully informed. If you are asking for a raise or promotion, make sure you are informed about the industry standard pay, job responsibilities and the value that you have brought to the team or company as a whole. You need to come into any meeting as your personal representative because you are your biggest advocate and you should be the one that is vocalizing what you want and why you deserve it.
Confidence should be worn like a coat on a cold day. It should accompany you wherever you go, no matter where you go. Many deals, negotiations and contracts have simply been won by the confidence in the room. So, when you are asking for what you want, you need to be wearing your confidence to make sure everyone knows why you deserve what you are asking for! I do realize that confidence may not come naturally to most people, and that is perfectly fine. In order to build your confidence there may need to be a “fake it till you make it” routine, until it becomes similar to the coat I mentioned earlier and is simply an afterthought or accessory to your outfit.
In order to accurately represent yourself, while asking for what you want, you need to have the evidence to support the claim. This means you need to have put the hard work in, to get to the space to ask for what you want. I should add that working hard does not necessarily mean that you need to have tons of work product to show, rather it means you need to have put the effort in, to show your value.
Do Your Best
This may be a similar sentiment to above, but you need to be in a spot where you are able to support asking and receiving what you want! The way to do this is, is to continuously put your best foot forward and do your best work. This is not always the easiest to do, but by making it a consistent habit of always presenting your best work, you become used to this output quality and never let yourself falter. I’m not saying you have to be perfect, but strive for your best!
In order to be able to ask for what you want and get it, you need to make sure you are doing everything in your power to show others why you deserve it. You are the one putting in the hard work everyday to achieve your dreams and you need to make sure others are aware of your dedication to your goals. By doing these four things you will successfully prepare yourself to be able to ask for what you want and achieve it!
